WORLD CUP 2010 - 16 days to go

Sad but true..this is me during Italia90. Wide eyed and naive. Each world cup marks us in time and those fanatical enough can easily recall what they were doing at each world cup. For me Italia90 was the first overnight experience, pushing physiological boundaries by watching games at 12, 2 and 4 and expecting the body to stay alert for Neurology and the Eye lectures. Ironic given that I was learning about the function of the Pineal gland (the gland responsible for time regulation that goes AWOL during overseas travel) during this time. So what will I be doing for South Africa 2010 some 20 years later? The same...except expecting my mind and body to deal with 3 kids, a list of patients, a tolerant and forgiving wife and a voice that tells me I should know better. But, like many other football tragics (and by the way, football will be meant for football where football is being referred to for the football fans...get the drift I'm sure, no nomenclatural ambiguities here), I will try again...and pay.

LIST OF THE DAY - PLAYERS WHO SHOULD HAVE BEEN ON THE PLANE TO JO'BURG

  1. Antonia Cassano
  2. Javier Zanetti
  3. Esteban Cambiasso
  4. Fernando Gago
  5. Karim Benzema
  6. Scott MacDonald (OK now I'm taking the proverbial)
ODD SPOT 1 - Daniel Allsop scores v AC Milan. Enough said.
ODD SPOT 2- Diego Armando Maradona has vowed to run naked showing his Chaminda Vass through the calles de Buenos Aires if Argentina take the chocolates on July 12. Probably not so strange given the omission of players 2,3 and 4 above.

Yours in football, GP

the "pundits" at SEN such as that ex-Melbourne footballer called "The Block", would actually question why Daniel Allflop was not called into the National Team considering he was the "star" of the A League

I would have thought you may have included Nicky Carle rather that "Fatty Fin" McDonald in that list. I think Fatty was actually a waste of space with the Eddie Thomson tactics, Pim Verbatim has decided to apply. As for Nicky Carle, skill full yes, but what has he done at club level and at a national level. Last time I saw the FootballRoos Nick came on but apart from a few oversteps he did not do a Crino or Petersen and take the game by the scruff of the neck. As for oversteps I believe my 6 year old will master it by the end of the year.

And the other thing with Nicholas Carle that did not assist is the choice of the club.... Crystal Palace???......Lecce at Serie C would have preferable.

On the last note I leave you with this pendering about your "special friend" Mourinho. His Inter beat who? Bayern and Barcelona two of the most entertaining football teams in Europe Bayern and Barcelona with between 25 to 40% ball possession and he and Inter are called brilliant. Otto wins Euro 2004 and he and the Greek national team are called "boring". Is there a bit of imbalance? How is such a comparison fair? I reckon if Otto was wearing an Armani suit he would have been coaching Real Madrid today!

Ohh one last thing, I know he has not gone as yet. However the only Dutch coach I would want to coaching Australia is the Frank "the Spittle" Rikjaard.....Otherwise bring Otto....

Yours in the greatest game in the world (to pinch an AFL moniker)

  2. Heh he Tommy. The point re Jose and Otto is true. But such paradoxes riddle our game don't they? Speaking of dullness perceived as brilliance, look out for the first of my ahem previews of the last 16 to make it through the group stage. Tonight, Italy.

  3. Hey GP, nice blog and just in time for the event of the year!!! I bet you didn't think that 20 years ago, while in that uni photo, "I might create a blog in 2010...", let alone understand what a 'blog' was (or mistake it for a 'bog')...

Looking forward to the games ahead and despite what the commentators, media hyenas and analysts 'predict' each and every game will end up being either a surprise or shock, depending how the team spends their time in preparation, let alone the taste of the African Delights the night before (food is what I am implying here).

    Cheers

  4. Brother Scorcho thank you for your kind words. Yes 20 years ago I had no blog on my mind as such. I am curious also as to the nutritional considerations of the teams. I don't expect the Italians for example to not bring a Giorgio Locatelli type along rather than rely on the local staple of Wildebeast Surprise...
