ENG-SVN ALG-USA AUS-SRB GHA-GER

After a @$%#*£¥ of a left middle ear infection, I am struggling.

Spending 2 hours last night at the Austin hospital when I could have been sleeping was a larger waste of time than reading the memoirs of Bill O'Chee.

In any case I managed to watch the GRE-ARG game and the URG-MEX fixture. Skimmed through the rigor mortis of Les Bleus, who will need Hannibal Lecter's number for the supplier of his mask as they face the biggest catapult of rotten tomatoes this year outside of Valencia.

The trap for young players is to try and do the allnighter. While the effort is somewhat Herculean, it is also profoundly idiotic. Better to sleep from 9-2, watch the previously recorded midnight special and then the 430 Australia-Serbia match. The alternative is to sleep until 6 and watch the latter game as recorded. This requires both the presence of mind to switch off the mobile and have all computers off as well as the ability to convince oneself that you are a true fan watching it live as it happens. As George Costanza said, "it's not a lie if you believe it".

As long as you've watched it before people who self issue licences to speak such as Karl Stefanovic, it counts.

For what it's worth;

ENG 2 SVN 0

USA 1 ALG 1

AUS 2 SRB 1

GER 3 GHA 0

ILL-INFORMED CRAP (and this time not from SEN)

As per human nature, the rumour mill and convergence of ill-informed crap masquerading as opinion are boiling away just as Australia is trying to focus on the crunch game v Serbia. needing 3 points and a 5 goal turnaround in our F and A, it is hardly the time for the mistress to be parading the new beau before the rich old man goes into the earth. Rale Rasic's opinion that we should be signing Ricki Herbert as our next coach falls somewhere in the triangle with angles George Burns, Mr Magoo and Woody Allen in the myopia stakes.

Perhaps Ricki Lake should also be interviewed if the name is what we are so attracted to, as I can’t see anybody’s interest being maintained after Paraguay bring the Kiwis back to reality on Friday morning.

This banal nationalistic push for a homegrown coach is nauseating. Rale has one point though: it is indeed criminal that the FFA could not find a place for Raul Blanco. The man has gotten over the decision by the FFA to persist with Graham Arnold by pursuing coaching elsewhere. The rest of us still have to live by the goose's actions. Bresciano's snubbing of Arnold after being substituted illustrated the disrespect for the man. How the FFA can seriously not have regrets about the man's continuing appointment is beyond a joke.

There will be plenty of time to hunt for Verbeek's successor after the campaign ends. If not for the coach himself, whi deserves little synpathy for his squad choice, choice of assistant and tactics v Germany, then at least for the players who do not need this peripheral crap as they attempt the impossible.

IT's A MAD MAD MAD MAD WORLD

In reference to the 1963 treasure hunt classic, I use the title to describe the chaotic Zeitgeist of the 2010 world cup.

In 2002, the best rappar was white, the best golfer black and we thought then that everything had gone plain crazy (thanks EB).

But then;

Ricki Herbert plays a 4-3-3 against the Italians and almost pulls it off;

Nicky Anelka calls Domenech a 'son of a whore', is promptly sent packing with the French squad refusing to train;

Andrew Bolt and Karl Stefanovic ride the bandwagon by attempting discourse on the Brasil-Ivory Coast match; and

SEN's morning show discuss the card system in soccer and the best they can come up with is an orange card for players who foul, who should then be expelled but who do not miss a match. This from a fraternity who want a simpler, streamlined match committee and judiciary process for their own code....

ITA 1 NZ 1
In any case, the major sour topic is the behaviour of the azzurri, whose antics surpassed even their own personal best efforts in cyncism. Even Berlusca himself could be heard saying 'troppo, troppo sale...' as Cannavarro, Chiellini et al paraded on the turf in an attempt to get a Kiwi sent off. In the end, Herbert showed gran coglioni to face them with a 4-3-3. Only De Rossi's deplorable antics saved them.

PAR 2 SLOVAKIA 1
The Paraguayans quite apart from having the nest looking fan I have seen so far, also continue the proud tradition of ruthless finishing that has characterised the South American teams. A sublime finish by Vera should be shown at ant shooting training session. I for one am hoping that Paraguay burst the white bubble that is New Zealand and introduce them to some harsh reality.

BRAZIL 3 IVORY COAST 1
A game highliighted by 2 extremes; great finishing and awful refereeing. Luis Fabiano's double hand ball for his 2nd goal in the 50" made Thierry Henry's look acceptable, while Kaka's expulsion was an exercise in farce alla Rivaldo. For all Sepp's assurances that referees would clamp down on simulation, the ridiculous antics have only made it easier for soccer sceptics to deride our great game.

The media driven implosion of the French and English squads continue apace, with the French team still not training and the feud between players and coaching staff for all to see (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJh_6s0B_Ms).

The English example though is less clear cut, with only Frank Lampard appearing as the calm voice amongst all the ill-informed crap, and John Terry showing the world what a class act he really is.

The next night saw a rampnat Portugal slam North Korea 7-0 (http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/matches/round=249722/match=300061487/index.html)
with a fine display of wide play and penetration that would not have pleased Pylon-Yang. Expect some a rush on South African citizenship this week. Love to see how Kim-Jong Il will edit this one for the masses. Coach Carlos Queiroz os one of my favourites, and anybody who celebrates the 5th, 6th and 7th goals like the 1st should be commended.

Chile eventually wore down a hopeful Swiss team 1-0 (http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/matches/round=249722/match=300061493/index.html)
. The Swiss showed resilience despite losing Valon Behrami to a rough chaleenge and could have snatched it late on, but the Chileans deserved the 3 points.

In the late/early game, Spain finally overcame their self-imposed neurosis, ignoring the chicas in the crowd to dominate and even flatter Honduras, winning 2-0 through a David Villa double that will have Barca fans asking 'Ibra-who?"

AUS 1 GHA 1

AUS 1 GHA 1

Coming up with a witty headline proves difficult under the circumstances.

Compare the pair:

AUS v GER

Schwarzer
Wilkshire Neill Moore Chipperfield
Emerton Valeri Grella
Garcia Cahill Culina

AUS v GHA

Schwarzer
Wilkshire Neill Moore Carney
Culina Valeri
Emerton Holman Bresciano
Kewell

Some optimism as Pim had appeared to have heeded the call for reason after the tactical debacle of Durban. Australai started well, with assured touches with the ball and solid pressing without. Reward came with Holman's opportunism after Bresciano's delivery over the wall from 22m.

After the goal though came a wave of nausea over the team. Better first touche could be seen on The Revenge of the Nerds as turnover after turnover gave the inititative in the middle third to Ghana. A failure by Emerton and Wilkshire to prevent Ayew cutting in from the right led to a cut back and the defining moment of the game as the shot struck Kewell on the line. These decisions are, even for football, greyer than grey. Every angle proved difficult to assess, as Kewell's eyes shut on impact. After the indignation and anger died down, an angle from behind and left of the goal showed an almost imperceptible shift of the body in a momentary calculation of shot path. As per the FIFA edict, Rosetti had no choice but to issue a red card and award a penalty; the 2 must go together. But consistency, even through the partisan vignette, was not observed as Lee Addy's agricultural invasion of Bresciano from behind attracted only a yellow.

Australia to this point had been slicker and more assured than the stuttering version of Durban. After the resultant penalty, Ghana used their advantage to great effect, with 2 good chances before the break.

After the interval, Australia slowly built up some momentum while still allowing Ghana some chances as they opened up at the back. As Graham Arbold shifted magnetic pieces on a whiteboard it was difficult to tell if the pieces were players' names or the new range of Lego. Bresciano's snubbing of Arnold as he came off provided a hint as to his standing within the international football community...ie none. As Messers Muscat and Basheer claimed knowingly that 'Pim would be delighted', Ghana created more chances. When our clear chance came through Emerton's super pass to Wilkshire, the latter lost composure and at 75" I had that sickening feeling. Again.

At the end, we could be somewhat proud of the effort under the citcumstances, although I felt a little squirmy at the gushing praise and adulation for a performance that was seen as one for the 'true believers' (thanks PJK). While Australia took the game where they could, it was hardly a case where 'it was hard to tell who had the man sent off' (Zelic).

The underlying reason for the position we were in stems back to squad selection, to tactics used in the first game, to the overall structure Australia had to adhere to. While the player I criticised the most(Craig Moore) showed great resilience with Lucas Neill, one could only imagine a defence with a faster Michael Beauchamp or a Sasha Ogdanovski (not even selected in the squad).

While the chance of progression is still a mathematical one, a term that stinks of death, we should play the last game with a sense of freedom. Moore and Kewell can not be considered, and perhaps we can go into the last game trying players like Rukyvytsia, like Beauchamp with the plan of taking the MO of the first 25 minutes in Rustenberg to Nelspruit.

In the studio wrap up, I wished the vuvuzelas could transcend time zones, as poor Charlie Dempsey has to endure the drivel of Kalac, Zelic and Zdrillic. Kalac, dressed in black suit and white tie, looked like a gumbah rejected from Godfather3 (thanks JK), Zelic looked like the sour lovechild of Seth Green and Alex Dimitriades, and Zdrillic imitating Michael Schumacher with a comic twist.

Lest my non sharing of the nationalistic gushing from Foster and the 3 stooges be perceived as cultural cringe, I ask only that the FFA employ someone with vision, experience and perspective when they appoint the next coach. The performance was a marked improvement, but was it any better than the best of Kaiserslautern.

As Dempsey wrapped up, he plugged Spider's testimonial, with the list of players present including Craig Moore.

Enough said.
