Germany 4 Australia 0. When I awoke at 9am, that scoreline was still there to greet me. I struggle with the enormity of the loss, not so much in the result: many teams have been pantsed by the Germans to this tune, but in the abject paucity of intent that Australia carried. No Bresch, Kewell or Jesus. The latter I could understand, but the first two gave me shivers. Presumably both were injured, but the choice of Cahill as a solo striker left me with en abdominal tenderness not felt since my appendix came out in March. The idea patently was to use the flank speed of Emerton, Garcia and Culina, but Culina had his hands full defending Lahm, Garcia seemed starstruck by the occasion until he eyes adjusted to the light but at least Emerton got forward on occasions.
After the initial tease of the double chance from the corner, Germany tore us a new one down Chipperfield's flank, with the first 2 goals coming from this source. After the break, Costa Mina doppelganger Marco Rodriguez over reacted to a tackle from Tim Cahill, where the knees were retracted, suggesting he was pulling out of the challenge. After that, more goals were an inevitability.
